What is Islam? A Comprehensive Guide to its True Meaning and Beliefs
Understanding Islam: The Path of Peace and Devotion
Is Islam a New Religion?
A common misconception is that Islam began 1,400 years ago. In reality, Islam represents the original message sent by God through all His Prophets since the dawn of humanity. It is the same faith preached by Adam, Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and Jesus (peace be upon them all).
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) did not bring a "new" religion; rather, he was the final messenger sent to restore and complete this eternal message in its most perfect and final form. As the Quran states:
"Say: We believe in Allah and that which was revealed to us... we make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we are Muslims." (Al-Qur’an 3:84)
Distinctive Features of Islam
Islam is unique because it honors the truth found in all previous divine scriptures, such as the Torah, Psalms, and Gospel. It serves as a universal bridge, encouraging Muslims to cooperate with "People of the Book" (Christians and Jews) based on shared values and God-consciousness. Its mission is to preserve the original truths while correcting human-made errors that crept into religions over time.
Humanity, Equality, and Brotherhood
Islam is a powerful force against racism and tribalism. It teaches that human diversity is a sign of God's wisdom and mercy, not a reason for conflict.
No Superiority: No individual is better than another based on skin color, language, nationality, or family background.
The Concept of Oneness: By emphasizing the Oneness of the Creator, Islam establishes the oneness of the human family.
True Merit: In the eyes of God, the only thing that distinguishes one person from another is Piety (Taqwa)—their level of God-consciousness and the goodness of their character.
Who are the Muslims?
Today, the Muslim community consists of nearly 1.9 billion people globally. While often associated with the Middle East, the majority of Muslims live in countries like Indonesia, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Significant communities also thrive in Europe, China, Russia, and the Americas (with millions in the USA). A Muslim is simply anyone who freely chooses to align their life with God’s will and follows the traditions (Sunnah) of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).
The Six Pillars of Faith (Imaan)
Every Muslim’s belief system is built upon these six foundational principles:
Belief in Allah: The One and Only God, with no partners.
Belief in Angels: Celestial beings created by Him.
Belief in Holy Books: Including the original Torah, Psalms, Gospel, and the Final Revelation, the Quran.
Belief in Prophets: From Adam to Muhammad (peace be upon them all).
Belief in the Day of Judgment: Accountability for our actions in the afterlife.
Belief in Al-Qadar: Divine Decree (God's ultimate knowledge of all things).
Why the Word 'Allah'?
Muslims prefer the word "Allah" over the English word "God" because it is a unique, personal name. Unlike "God," the word Allah has no plural (you cannot say "Allahs") and no gender. It represents the Supreme Being who is unique and perfect. Interestingly, Arab Christians and Jews also use the word "Allah" in their prayers, as it is the same word for God in Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus (pbuh).
Conclusion
In essence, Islam is not just a collection of rituals; it is a complete way of life centered on peace, justice, and the worship of the One Creator. It serves as a timeless guide for humanity, promoting brotherhood and equality regardless of race or status. By understanding the core values of Islam—mercy, devotion, and compassion—we can find a path toward spiritual fulfillment and global harmony. Whether you are a Muslim seeking to deepen your faith or a seeker of knowledge, Islam’s message of "Submission to God" remains a beacon of light for all
